In 1809, during Austria's war against Napoleonic France and its allies Bavaria, Württemberg and Saxony, there was a French army camp on Linzer Berg.


Austrian troops were stationed in Neumarkt. Troops became involved in skirmishes during mutual espionage. On the Tumbacherberg near the Sonnleitner farmhouse is the "French grave" of 60 fallen soldiers. In the night from 4 to 5 June 1809, Napoleonic soldiers were ambushed in the market and killed in battle. Convinced that the citizens of Gallneukirchen were lying in wait for the soldiers, the commander wanted to plunder and pillage the market square.
