Exhibition Wonderworld Forest Wilderness

With 20,825 hectares, the Limestone Alps National Park is the largest forest reserve in Austria. Here, man is once again allowing natural dynamics to take hold. Wilderness is returning and with it an abundance of species and a mixed forest of graceful beauty.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a diversity diorama depicting a piece of natural forest: on the one hand with large inhabitants such as lynx, deer, badger and fox, but also with the birds of the forest down to the smallest insects in the leafy branches and under the bark of the trees. Under wooden flaps you can see the feeding traces of book printers & co and you will learn the difference between wood eaters and wood gnawers. You will learn how tall the largest tree in the National Park is and how old trees become when they grow as old as nature intended.

Forest cinema - wilderness on the forest floor
Forest Cinema - A fascinating nature film "On the Way to Forest Wilderness" lets you immerse yourself in the fairytale landscape of the Reichraminger Hintergebirge: with black stork, bear and lynx as the main characters. The "Wilderness in the Ground" experience box is located in the open-air area and shows the hidden world three centimetres below the surface of the ground. Here they stand face to face with soil animals enlarged hundreds of times: predatory stonecreepers, peaceful earthworms, isopods, sap bugs - everything to attack, if you dare.

National Park Shop
Here you can buy books about the National Park, its surroundings and nature, hiking maps to help you find your way around and find the best hiking tours, postcards, regional products, souvenirs and games for children for research and experimentation to remind you of special experiences in the Kalkalpen National Park.
Forest workshop
There is a particularly attractive offer for school classes and youth groups.

In the National Park Forest Workshop, children and young people can be active themselves. Modern microscopes, specimens and a variety of natural materials are available for research and experimentation. Under the expert guidance of National Park guides, children and young people playfully learn about our most important tree species, make nesting boxes and musical instruments out of wood and discover mysterious organisms in the soil and dead wood under the microscope.
