Erlebniswelt Energie

Timelkam, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

Over the last two centuries, resourceful researchers and explorers have unlocked many secrets of electricity. The use of electricity has changed our world. Electricity has become the basis of modern life and prosperity, of education and mobility, of communication and, last but not least, of our social systems.

Organised into exciting individual themes, the electricity stories tell the fascinating story of the social and cultural revolution that electricity brought with it.

Beautiful historical exhibits, old plans and electrical appliances form a unity with interactive information systems and state-of-the-art information technology - this part of the world of experience brings history and the present to life.

Timelkam makes steam

In the World of Energy Experience, you can learn all about the history of the Timelkam power station site.

The Timelkam power station, built by Stern und Hafferl in 1924/25, was a stable factor in the supply of lignite from Ampflwang and thus contributed to securing coal mining in Upper Austria for decades. A total of around 16 million tonnes of lignite were converted into electricity in 1995. In the 1990s, it became apparent that the WTK coal mines were being exhausted. The then OKA began converting the power plant to hard coal firing, which was shut down in summer 2008 in favour of the new gas and steam turbine plant. While it used to be the coal trains, today it is the ÖGEG nostalgia trains that travel "full steam ahead" to Timelkam to experience the world of energy.

Today, Timelkam is one of the most modern power plant locations in Europe with a biomass power plant and Austria's largest, most modern power plant, a gas and steam turbine plant with an output of 420 megawatts, and the Erlebnis Welt Energie, which offers fascinating insights into the world of electricity on an exhibition area of around 1,000 square metres.
