Like no other organisation, the Federal Forests bear responsibility for Austria’s natural environment. By overseeing and managing 10 per cent of the country’s land area, ÖBf AG is the largest steward and manager of natural areas, the largest forestry operator, and the largest owner of hunting grounds and fishing waters. Sustainability is the guiding principle for the Federal Forests and is also enshrined in its mission statement. In the context of forestry, this means that only as much raw material is taken from nature as is continuously replenished. Taken further and placed in a global context, this means that equal consideration is given to the protection of nature, the needs of society and commercial success. The four pillars – forestry, property, services and renewable energy – form the foundation for an entrepreneurial endeavour that constantly strives to strike a balance between three areas of tension: ecological goals, social interests and economic considerations must be constantly reassessed in relation to one another – therein lies the business challenge facing Österreichische Bundesforste AG.
