Rastplatz Weisses Kreuz
Baumgartenberg, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Weisses Kreuz rest area in Baumgartenberg
Cultivation and extraction
Here, just north of the Machland, are the southern fringes of the Mühlviertel, which form a border area between the Bohemian Massif and the Danube lowlands. These are mostly south-facing, climatically favoured areas where viticulture was also practised in the Middle Ages. Today this is being resumed on a small scale. The area is characterised by agriculture and fruit trees are typical landscape elements. Due to the Tethys primeval sea, there are extensive sediment deposits of sand and silt, while loess layers date back to the Quaternary period. These raw materials are mined in many places. The southern fringes of the Mühlviertel harbour the last refuges for thermophilic biocoenoses. Water areas, steep walls, raw soils and abandoned mining areas are further valuable biotopes.
Are there even still numerous wine barrels underground near Baumgartenberg? The Danube legend "The sunken wine" tells how this happened and when it is possible to get the wine out of the ground.
