Welt der Biotope

Peilstein im Mühlviertel, Oberösterreich , Österreich

The Peilsteiner biotopes are known far beyond the borders of the state, especially through its biotopes and wet meadows.

The numerous protected animals and plants are native. Of the more than 40 biotopes 6 are freely accessible (Häuslin, Thousands gorge, Hofwiese, Hemmerau, Wäschbachl, Blumau), the "Häuslin" even for wheelchair users to reach easily. At the beginning of the 1990s, some nature-conscious Peilsteiners started to plant biotopes and soon beetles, frogs, toads and newts discovered these ponds as an excellent habitat. These wetland biotopes, with their meanwhile illustrious society of small creatures and interesting ones, have thrived well because they are embedded in an intact landscape. Such a biotope is located in the "Häuslin", south of the village on a clearing. The water monkeys and the iridescent dragonflies feel particularly well here. But also plants love this habitat: For example, the cotton grass and the iris, which flowers at the beginning of summer, the orchid and the carnivorous sundew. The Thousand Gorge is a small natural paradise that owes its name to a legend. Numerous natural, small waterfalls gush down into the valley. Especially in spring, when snowmelt throws the Kirchbacher stream into the valley with a roar, it is a special nature experience. Six stations with boards and interesting information about different birds invite you to linger and watch. A special attraction also for children: At the touch of a button the corresponding bird sounds can be heard from a nesting box! Near the village Eschernhof, the highest elevation in the municipality, was created at the dry biotope Hemmerau a rest area with overwhelming views. The view can sweep over Adalbert Stifter's Hochwald, the Bohemian Forest from Plöckenstein to the ruin Wittinghausen. You can admire in this dry biotope Hemmerau but also numerous rare plants and animals. Contact address for guided tours: Mr. Mühlbauer Berginger Straße 3 4153 Peilstein Tel .: ++ 43 7287 7341
