The Mönch in the Aisttal valley near Riedlhammer is one of the legendary moulded stones in the Mühlviertel.
The Mönch near Prandegg in Bad Zell is a granite crag around 60 metres high with over 72 climbing routes with difficulty levels 1 to 9+. It is predominantly warty granite climbing on blocked cubes with an average route length of 15 metres. Legend has it that the bride of a blacksmith in the Aisttal valley was once abducted by a knight from Prandegg. The embittered blacksmith killed the knight and was banished to distant lands. After many years, he returned as a monk and wandered up the Aisttal valley to the place where his outline can still be recognised today. Cursing, he raised his fist in the direction of Prandegg and turned to stone.
