St. Sebald on the Heiligenstein has been a popular pilgrimage destination since the 15th century. More than 600 years ago, on 29 August 1413, a chapel was consecrated in honour of all the saints, but especially St. Sebald. The remarkable thing is that Sebald was not officially canonised until 12 years later and he is not venerated anywhere else in Austria. The miracles Sebald worked in the area around Nuremberg were transferred to the saint's stone in folk legend. His appeal to the population was enormous, especially in the Baroque period. Even today, he is regarded as an intercessor in cases of illness and misfortune, as the patron saint of cattle and even as a matchmaker.

The mountain church on the 782 m high hill between Gaflenz and Weyer is the only Sebaldus church in Austria. It is not only a jewel of art history; to this day pilgrims come from near and far. The annual highlight is the Sebaldi Festival.

In the anniversary year 2013, the "Heiligenstein Theme Trail" was opened: At several stations in and around the church, visitors receive the most important information about the history of the mountain shrine, its significance as a place of pilgrimage and about the work of St. Sebald.

Since 2020, the Heiligenstein has been the highlight of the Sebaldus Pilgrimage Route through the National Park Region.

St Sebald's Chapel is always open for prayer, and the church's arbour also remains open.

From the arbour at the back of the church, where you will also find the stamp for the Sebaldusweg, you have a beautiful view into the church and of the relic of St. Sebald, which was placed here on Whit Monday 2021.
