Stadtpfarrkirche - Katharinenmünster

Freistadt, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The parish church is a 5-aisled basilica with a magnificent choir vault. (Church guide is available). The parish church, a Romanesque basilica from the 13th century, was Gothicised in the 14th and 15th centuries, was given a 4th and 5th, albeit shorter, side aisle and finally, executed by the Freistadt master stonemason Mathes Klayndl between 1485 and 1501, the magnificent Gothic east choir with a height of 15 metres and an elaborately intertwined vault.

As the church also burnt down in the great town fires of 1507 and 1516, nothing has survived of the rich and precious furnishings of the church with over a dozen altars. But even of the new furnishings of the 16th century, only the altar of the Holy Helpers has survived, because these furnishings were not appreciated in the subsequent Baroque period and were therefore removed and replaced by Baroque ones.
