Plesching Oyster Bed

Steyregg, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The unique Plesching Oyster Bed has been listed as a Natural Monument since September 1998. You´ll find the Oyster Bed on the grounds of an abandoned sand mine. It sprawls over an area of 8.2 hectares and derived its name from the wide variety of fossils that were collected here - among them shark teeth and oysters.

Explore a place of wonder and discovery: Take in the area´s diverse mixture of gently rolling foothills, woodland and wetland. This unique natural habitat area accommodates rare plants and animals, some of which can only be found in this area anymore. There are more than 194 species of plants, 17 of which are facing a high risk of extinction in the near future. What´s more, the Oyster Bed showcases a perfect natural habitat area for wildlife, above all hymenopterans (bees, bumblebees, ants, etc.). The area accommodates 58 species of birds, 307 different butterflies and moths, 93 beetle and spider species as well as rare reptiles.
