Wilhering Cistercian Abbey and Church
Wilhering, Oberösterreich, Österreich
- Suitable for groups
The 850 year old Cistercian Abbey ranks among Wilhering's most important characteristics.
Architecture - History - Crafts
In 1146 the Cistercian Abbey was founded by Ulrich von Cholo, a foundation that influenced both the cultural and spiritual life of the entire region. The Abbey was a well-known place of education and of worship, a meeting place for artists and craftsmen. A fire destroyed the building in 1733 and only a few years later the church was rebuilt in Rococo style. A number of artists decorated the church´s interior with precious Rococo elements, among them the Altomonte brothers and the stuccowork artists from Wessobrunn.
