Worldwide Nativity Scenes - Pils Collection

Steinbach an der Steyr, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather

The exhibition of nativity scenes from all over the world comprises almost 600 nativity scenes from almost 100 countries. Among them are magnificent as well as simple figures and works that stand out for their special craftsmanship or rare techniques. Local nativity scenes, such as the Loammandl box nativity scenes typical of the region, are also represented.

With the guest card "In Sum More" you receive a 20% discount on one admission.

Since 2001, the initially private small collection has been housed in its own cot house on the town square. It is so extraordinary because it differs clearly from the conventional cot exhibitions, which are mostly about the elaborately designed houses, palaces, cities, caves, etc.. Here in the cot house in Steinbach, however, the focus is on the figures, the materials and the curious handicraft techniques from the most diverse countries. Rarities such as the only Japanese large-scale cot or a hand-knotted Iranian carpet with 700,000 knots, works by Indians, Aborigines, Papuans and Inuit can be marvelled at. But the most exciting thing is a guided tour of the cot house, where you can take a look "behind the scenes" and find out how some of the cots found their way to the cot house in Steinbach. This year's cot of the year is a hand-blown, painted glass ball cot from the time shortly after the First World War.

Christmas tree decorations of yesteryear
Who remembers the beautiful old Christmas tree decorations from childhood? Colourful and made of glass, they once hung on our Christmas trees as bells, snowmen, pine cones, birds and much more. Rediscovered today, the Krippenhaus offers genuine nostalgic Christmas tree decorations from Gablonz and Thuringia. There is also a large selection of nativity scene accessories.

Holzknechtweihnacht
The fire crackles in the Lanfthütte next to the Nativity House, the wood servants' soup hangs in the kettle over the fireplace and punch and snowballs are waiting to be tasted. The lumberjacks reveal the secrets of old craftsmanship and reveal where some sayings like "ripper and obizahrer" actually come from. A cosy atmosphere sets in when darkness falls and you can enjoy heart-warming food for body and soul over an open fire in the old woodcutter's hut.
