Community Hospital Church

This gem of late Gothic architecture was built in the 15th century, along with the Bürgerspital—a hospital attached at a right angle—for innocent citizens of Braunau who had fallen on hard times.

The architect is believed to have been part of the school of the famous Hans von Burghausen. The church features tall, pointed-arch windows, buttresses projecting from the walls, and a high roof.

Inside, we can see it as a fine example of the so-called hexagonal churches, which are common in the Braunau district and the neighboring Bavarian region, and admire its beautiful net rib vault composed of regular rhombuses.

The altars were created in the late 17th century by the Baroque artist Sebastian Högenauer. Johannes Froschauer painted the altarpieces: “The Descent of the Holy Spirit” and “The Ascension of Christ.”
