Painters' Quarter "Malerwinkel"

Braunau am Inn, Oberösterreich, Österreich

If you hike eastward along the Romantic Trail high above the Färbergraben, you’ll pass the water tower, the fountain house, and the bathhouses on your way to the Malerwinkel, which marks the end of this short trail. The view of the city’s towers is truly picturesque: the water tower, the gate tower, the city tower, and the tower of St. Stephen, which towers above them all. Here you’ll pass the three bathhouses: the Vorderbad (at Färbergasse 13), the Mitterbad (at Am Berg 1), and the Hinterbad (at Mühlengasse 2). While the Vorderbad was operated by the city primarily for the city’s poor, the Mitterbad served as a bathhouse for the wealthy citizens. The Hinterbad belonged to the Holy Spirit Hospital and was intended primarily for the hospital’s benefactors. From Malerwinkel, you also have a beautiful view of the settlement on the hill, which was the first urban expansion after 1380. The trail described here was only completed a few years ago.
