Parish Church of Schalchen

In 1672, the famous Upper Austrian sculptor Thomas Schwanthaler created a sculpture for the Parish Church at Schalchen, depicting "The Beheading of Saint Barbara", the church´s patron saint. This elaborate piece of art shows the brave martyr with her executioner in the figure of a Turk. These days, the Ottomans were considered a major threat to the Occident.
