Farmer's War Inn & Beech Tree

Lembach im Mühlkreis, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

The Farmer's War Inn and the Beech Tree remind of the "Grand Upper Austrian Farmer's War" of 1626 in "Habach" (Community of Lembach). A fatal fight between local farmers and occupying soldiers of Bavaria occurred in Habach on May 17, 1626. The fight became entangled in a larger conflict which resulted in the "Grand Upper Austrian Farmer's War". The Inn at Habach served as the farmer´s headquarter for its secluded location (which today is not a Guesthouse anymore!).

Hundreds of farmers rose up in revolt and lit a fire on a wooded foothill as the signal to attack. The beech tree that had stood there for centuries was cut down in 1937. On occasion of the Farmer's War commemoration ceremonies in the year 1976, a new beech tree was planted on this historical site.

A memorial tablet at the former Inn at Habach commemorates the brave uprising of the farmers.
