Plague pandemics erupted and ravaged Upper Austria in the first half of the 18th century.

In the years 1711 and 1714 the plague hit Kirchberg. A plague hospital was installed in Sauldorf. The death were buried in Rödl. The plague column was erected in the year 1914 to commemorate the great plague of these years.
