"Giant fir tree"
On a slope sloping down to the Katztal at 600 metres above sea level, 3920 metres east of the parish church of Munderfing, an hour's walk from the village, stood a silver fir in the middle of a near-natural mixed forest of beech, fir and spruce. The tree had a circumference of around 5.30 metres at chest height, was 40 metres high and was estimated to be 400 years old.
As the famous giant fir was already completely withered and huge dry branches kept falling or threatening to fall, it became a danger.
A 2.4 metre high tree stump was left standing and preserved in memory of the giant fir tree. A "roof" protects the rest of the trunk from further weathering and still gives the viewer an idea of its gigantic dimensions at the time.
