Parish Church of Waldburg & Winged Altars

Hardly anywhere else in Austria can you find three Gothic winged altars at once like in the church in Waldburg near Freistadt.

However, the church is dominated by the high altar with the Mother of God Mary, St Catherine and the church's patron saint Mary Magdalene.
The wing reliefs also show her in the scenes of her penitential life. The outer wings and the back wall of the shrine show the Easter cycle in vivid panel paintings. The two carved side altars are dedicated to St Laurentius and St Wolfgang.

The rather simple depiction of the figures still has a special charm for many viewers today. This makes them appear very lifelike, which was probably appreciated by the church people at the time of their creation in 1517 - 1523. These works are artistically valuable because they are a fine example of the best folk art.
