Knife Makers Museum in Steinbach an der Steyr

Steinbach an der Steyr, Oberösterreich , Österreich

The trade museum of the blade smiths, grinders and knife makers is located in the former knife makers guild workshops and recounts the times when the knife makers trade flourished in Steinbach an der Steyr.

The Geschememuseum of the Blingenschmiede, Schleifer and Messerer is located in the former workshops of the Messer-Guild and tells of the times when the knife-making business flourished in Steinbach on the Steyr. Until 1967, the Steinbacher Messerers in the Messerfabrik Fanz Pils & Söhne created true works of art under the toughest working conditions. In the "Messerermuseum", more than 200 m2 of exhibition space will be presented to the craftsmen of knives and bladesmiths, their importance for people and their settlement development.

  • EC: Knife manufacturing
  • 1. OG: The life of Knifemakers, their customs and their lives
  • 2nd floor: The historical development, Messerer-Zunft, trade connections of the "Golden Steinbach", guild and church

To the Steinbacher Messererzunft, the craftsmen mentioned belonged to Steinbach in a radius of 2 miles (15.4 km), they were mentioned for the first time in 1422. Under the toughest working conditions the Steinbacher Messser created true works of art, which they sold at the most distant markets. The knives were so rich that the place was formerly called "Golden Steinbach".

From the station of the Steyrtal-Museumsbahn, follow the signposted Messererweg along the Steyr, where the history of the houses, the knives and the dealers will be presented. After the museum, the path leads up to the marvelous village square, where today the façades and architectural details remind us of the flourishing trade with Venice.

After a visit to the Museum of the Knights, walk up the Hochgasse up to the idyllic village square and enjoy a panoramic view from the Sengsengebirge over the Dead Mountain to the foothills of the Alps and the central area of Upper Austria (walking time 1 hour)
