Castle Park

Schärding, Oberösterreich , Österreich

In 1895, the former castle courtyard was redesigned into a park. What is now the observation pavilion used to be the “Pallas“, i.e. the castle’s prestigious residential building. The little Baroque garden boasts a statue of Saint Florian dating from the 17th Century. Another realistic recreation, this time of a war cannon in the castle’s northern jutty, recalls the city’s history of frequent defense battles. On the inner ring wall, a commemorative plaque recalls the “Schärding Peace Agreement of 1369“, a historical event marking the town’s falling to what was then the Kingdom of Bavaria.

Schärding castle became an important fortress in the 14th and 15th centuries under Duke Albrecht I. and Duke Ludwig the Bearded of Bavaria. By the time it reached its heyday some two centuries later, it had become an imposing complex, dominated by a mighty keep. Having been almost completely destroyed by the devasting fires of 1724 and 1775, it was never rebuilt, although the former courtyard was refashioned as a park in 1895.
