Kopfing parish church and peace memorial

A Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist.

Parish Church
The church was built in 1904–1905. It is believed that the church, built on the ridges of the Sauwald and visible from afar, had already been constructed during the time of Rupert, the Apostle of Bavaria. What is certain is that the first church was a wooden structure, which was likely replaced by a Romanesque stone building only in the 12th or 13th century. The church tower was erected in the 14th century as a Gothic defensive tower, at a time when our town also served as the summer residence of the canons of Passau Cathedral. In 1904–1905, the parish church was rebuilt in its current form. Kopfing was a noble estate, a retreat and hunting ground for the bishops of Passau. This is likely also the reason why such a precious church treasure could be acquired. The showpiece is the missal dating from 1760, which is adorned with silver fittings and is considered a masterpiece.

Peace Monument
The granite obelisk comes from Kopfing’s first war memorial. The Peace Monument (1985), located in front of the church, was erected in memory of the Austrian, Bavarian, and Danish soldiers who fell in 1703 –1704 in our region during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), and to those residents of Kofing who lost their lives here on November 25, 1703, in the fight for their freedom.
