Pfarrkirche Altenhof

Gaspoltshofen, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Patrocinium of St Koloman
St Coloman is invoked as the patron saint of possessions, livestock and especially horses. He was also venerated as the patron saint of springs and wells and was therefore invoked for "good" water and protection against flooding.

From the history of the building:

The parish church is a baroqueised country church. The nave has a single aisle with a recessed two-bay choir. The altars and the pulpit, which are in Baroque style, were probably created at the beginning of the 19th century.
It cannot be proven whether a church already existed when it was first mentioned in a document in 1263, but it is probable.
The church is said to have been plundered by Protestant peasants during the peasant uprisings. In 1622, priest Wolfgang Pugleutner from Gaspoltshofen complained to the governor's office in Linz that most of the chapel outside the choir had collapsed. It was not until 1630 that the church could be provisionally repaired. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1664.
On 13 June 1728, the church burned down for unknown reasons. As almost the entire village of Altenhof had fallen victim to the flames, the people had to fend for themselves and were unable to repair the church. Even the patron saint, Prince von Trautson auf Köppach, could not be persuaded to contribute even one kreuzer towards the restoration. In this hopeless situation, Pastor Sepp von Seppenburg from Gaspoltshofen came to the rescue. He undertook the restoration of the church, had it painted at his own expense and donated a beautiful altar, which is still the centrepiece of the church today. In return, he held an annual office.
Sepp von Seppenburg had a life-size statue of the Virgin Mary, which probably dates from around 1500, placed on the high altar. This soon became the object of special veneration and made Altenhof a popular place of pilgrimage.
