Nachtwächterhaus

High above the market, on the Buchberg, stands the Wächterhaus, one of the market's landmarks. The tower-like building, which dates back to the 16th century, was once part of the defences of the Mattigtal valley. The night watchman lived in this house, from where he could overlook the entire market and raise the alarm immediately in the event of a fire. The last time a night watchman was employed was in 1920. Today, several youth groups spend their holidays here every year.
