300 years of Gasthaus zur GIS
Yes, it's been quite a long time since Zäzilia Hengstschläger opened the first snack bar on the Gis in 1702. After her early death, her sister Magdalena and her husband Mathias looked after the inn until their two sons Anton and Johann were ready to continue running what is popularly known as the "GH Kuhenödt".
How did the name "Kuhenödt" come about? It's quite simple - the first stallion farmer who settled here cleared the trees and herded his cows there. As the mountain gradually cleared, the current name Lichtenberg was born!
While Johann Hengstschläger, the well-known "Gis-Hans", ran the business (around 1900), his brother Toni was a pioneer of Austrian ski production. He produced the first "Dachstein" brand ash skis and his patented ash double pole. Gis-Hans passed the inn on to his son Hans (1936), who was also mayor of Eidenberg, and he in turn passed it on to his son Wilhelm Hengstschläger and his wife Helga in 1971.
Since February 2003, the younger generation has been in charge again! Daughter Martina Hengstschläger and her team are bringing a breath of fresh air to the GIS! After many renovations and a new young and dynamic concept, they are on the verge of making the traditional inn on the GIS a popular destination for hikers, runners, cyclists and sun worshippers once again.
