Guided Tour of the St. Oswald Schnaps Museum

The former scythe and tool forge “Hitzlhammer” was first mentioned in a document in 1635. It has been owned by the Mittendorfer family since 1870. The forge was converted into a sawmill and planing mill. Since 1883, the family has operated a commercial distillery. To mark the 100th anniversary of the business, a small museum was opened; like the rest of the premises, it is located about 2 km outside of St. Oswald.

Before the tasting, visitors have the opportunity to tour the distillery—which is still in operation today—and view the equipment, storage vessels, and mash tuns from days gone by in the small museum. The distillery’s motto is: Tradition and quality in a beautiful setting! Guests will also learn interesting facts about the production of high-proof alcohol; they can discover the differences between schnapps, brandy, water, and spirit, and compare old and new distillation technologies. Anyone wishing to take a guided tour—whether individuals, small groups, or larger tour groups—is asked to please register by phone. The reason is simple: We want to make time for our guests!
