That you whizzed down wooden miners’ slides and walked in the footsteps of those who lived here millennia ago—in the Hallstatt Salt Worlds, the world’s oldest salt mine!

Before you can explore the tunnels in the salt mine, you’ll first take the Salzbergbahn railway up a steep incline. In just a few minutes, you’ll ascend 360 meters into the Hallstatt high valley. Did you know that people were already mining for salt here 7,000 years ago? That makes Hallstatt the oldest salt mine in the world! The burial ground in the Hallstatt High Valley bears witness to this long-gone era. At several stops—such as the walk-through exhibition grave — you ’ll learn all sorts of interesting facts about the prehistoric settlers and the world-famous town that gave its name to an entire era.

Underground: Miners’ slides, Bronze Age cinema, and more

After a short walk through the Hallstatt High Valley, the Hallstatt Salt Worlds welcome you with a hearty “Glück Auf!” Your exciting journey into the heart of the mountain begins at the Miners’ House: First, you’ll walk into the mountain, where you’ll explore the tunnels underground with a Salzwelten guide, whiz down the miners’ slide, and learn fascinating stories and facts about salt mining. What’s more, the world’s oldest salt mine holds another record: Europe’s oldest wooden staircase was discovered in the prehistoric Hallstatt tunnels—built 2,800 years ago! Today, the staircase is the star of the “Bronze Age Cinema,” 400 meters underground—probably the deepest cinema in the world. A thrilling ride on the mine train brings you back up to the surface.

After exploring the depths of the mountain, another highlight awaits you—in the truest sense of the word: the Hallstatt Skywalk! A twelve-meter-long walkway that juts out into thin air! Do you dare to go all the way to the very front?
