Tamed river… After its way through the gorge the Danube reaches the Eferding Basin in Aschach. The Danube used to have many extensive bifurcations. Today it is restricted to a narrow river bank, limited by embankment dams. The typical gravel banks and shallow water zones are missing. Renaturation projects are supposed to provide relief and recover this valuable habitats. Of importance for this are also near-natural stagnant waters, which remained from the former Danube landscape in form of cut-off meanders, ponds and pools. Some of them accommodate rare plant species like the water violet (Hottonia palustris).
