Rafting and timber floating

Until around 65 years ago, Au an der Donau was characterised by rafting and timber floating. Rafts that came from places upstream, especially from the Enns estuary, were assembled here into larger rafts for the onward journey to Vienna and Budapest. The small "Enns raft" became the large "Budapest raft". On the other hand, timber that had travelled a distance of sometimes 80 kilometres was also taken from the Aist, stacked, sold and transported onwards by ship or train. Au an der Donau was the largest timber handling centre in the monarchy.
