Description:
Your hike begins in the town center; from here, the trail heads southwest along the Villa Böck Trail and down the Aignerberg, past the “Aigner Kreuz” pilgrimage chapel, before turning left into the Kembbach Valley. This is where you’ll find the second starting point for the Wolfsschlucht loop: the Speckalm parking lot. After crossing the bridge, turn left onto the forest path; after a few minutes’ walk, you’ll reach the entrance to the gorge. This is where the “Greiner Duschen” once stood, and just above them, by the waterfall, members of the nobility used to take Kneipp baths in the “Wiener Wellen Bäder.” Many steps lead up through the gorge; past the Anton Bruckner Refuge, you’ll reach Neptune’s Grotto via narrow paths—this is where the men’s and women’s showers were once located. More steps lead you to the Herzogsquelle; from there, continue hiking to the left, past the Jägersitz, and make your way up to Kreuzen Castle. We recommend touring the castle and enjoying a light snack at the castle tavern. From here, follow the road back to Bad Kreuzen.Tip:
To get the most out of this hike, I highly recommend walking through the Wolfsschlucht from the bottom to the top—that way, you can enjoy the gorge’s full splendor, including its waterfalls. It’s also worth glancing to the left or right every now and then. You might spot one or two “stone creatures.” The Wolfsschlucht loop can be started at three different points: in addition to the town center, you can also begin at the castle or at the Speckalm parking lot. My tip for the second Wolfsschlucht hike: You can also combine the Wolfsschlucht with the Speckalm Trail. To do this, hike through the Wolfschlucht to the Herzogsquelle; from there, continue straight ahead. After a short while, you’ll cross a small bridge on the right, and then a romantic forest trail will lead you directly to the popular Speckalm snack bar (be sure to reserve a table).Safety guidelines:
In the Wolfschlucht, sturdy footwear and caution are recommended, especially when it rains—the wet steps are very slippery. The Wolfschlucht is not recommended in winter; if you do decide to hike through it, extreme caution is advised.Equipment:
