Where history picks up speed

The Danube - the river of time

It has set the pace for over 2,000 years: as a border and connection, as a muse and trade artery. Where Roman legions once marched, cyclists glide along today - accompanied by the rhythm of the river. The Danube has always been on the move and those who follow it can feel how its power shapes history, art and pleasure.

Enns. Where it all begins.

The starting point of the cycle tour is Enns the oldest town in Austria. At the Lauriacum Museum, you can immerse yourself in the Roman past - with augmented reality between legionary helmets and ancient walls. Then it's time to go: Helmet on, pedalling, the Danube in view - and off to the west.

Wilhering Abbey. Baroque that opens up the sky.

A detour from the Danube cycle path leads to Wilhering Abbey - a baroque work of art full of lightness. Between ceiling frescoes, gardens and Danube meadows, you will understand why cycling here is more than just exercise: It is a continuation of culture by other means.

Engelhartszell. Pleasure with pedal power.

After the next bend in the river, Engelszell Abbey, once Austria's only Trappist monastery, awaits. Here you can taste spirituality - in Trappist beer, fine liqueurs and handmade cheese. A short stop at the monastery shop is a must before continuing with a tailwind.

Schütz Art Museum. When the Danube becomes a gallery.

The Schütz Art Museum in Engelhartszell is just a few turns of the river away: concrete meets alluvial forest, contemporary art meets history. The architecture opens up to the river as if the Danube itself were on display. Between sculptures and reflections, a dialogue is created about time, space and what remains.

Römerburgus Oberranna. Heritage turned to stone.

The Römerburgus Oberranna rises up at the end of the stage - a UNESCO World Heritage Site Danube-Limes the best-preserved ancient building in Upper Austria. 1,700 years old and still standing. Here you can feel how deeply the Danube has inscribed its history - in stone, in landscape, in identity.
