Power and myths: the castle route on the Danube cycle path

Where the wheel of history turns

Anyone travelling along the Danube Cycle Path experiences history as they pass by - or rather, as they experience it. The Danube accompanies cyclists like a silent narrator, telling tales of knights, noble families, power games and myths. Between wide Danube bends, shady riparian forests and charming villages, one cultural site follows the next on this stage - perfect for anyone who wants to combine pleasure cycling and culture.

Castles and palaces on the Danube cycle path

Cycle off from the majestic Starhemberg Castle whose history dates back to the 12th century. Between the arcaded courtyard, fortified walls and sweeping views, you immerse yourself in the world of the nobles who once used the river for trade, power and diplomacy.

After a pleasantly flowing cycle passage downstream, the legendary Clam Castle - today one of the most spectacular concert venues in Austria. Where knights once lived, rock bands now take to the stage. The atmosphere is unique: a thousand years of history echoing in the old stone walls.

Culture in Grein: Theatre, castle and Danube romance

In Grein the "Pearl of the Danube", a cultural rarity awaits: the historic historic Grein Municipal Theatre the oldest theatre in Austria that has been in continuous operation. Here you can experience theatre as it was 230 years ago - with original boxes, wooden seats and a touch of nostalgia.

Just a few metres further on is the Greinburg Castle. Its knights' halls, the Danube Cabinets and the marvellous arcaded courtyard make it one of the most romantic castles on the Danube. A view not to be missed: Above the bricks of the castle - the Danube like a blue-green ribbon.
