Where cycling becomes a borderline experience

If you are travelling in the Bohemian Forest , you will not only experience nature - but three countries in passing. The three-country cycle tour connects Austria, Bavaria and the Czech Republic on a route that feels like travelling between worlds: from the scent of deep green forests to light-coloured granite, from old smugglers' trails to cultural traces of the alluvial canal. It is a tour for those who seek tranquillity, appreciate the density of altitude and like to feel how the landscape intensifies with every step.

Between countries, forests and time

The start is in Schwarzenberg, a place that seems to have invented slowness. Just a few kilometres later, you roll over the first border - an unspectacular moment that nevertheless feels special: a few metres, a different country, a new rhythm. The route continues via Oberschwarzenberg deep into the Stifter landscape. Steep forest passages, soft coniferous soil, light-coloured granite - it's the kind of nature that doesn't have to be loud to make an impression.

The alluvial canal: History to be travelled

Between Haidmühle and Jelení Vrchy, the historic alluvial canal accompanies the route. A monument to Austrian engineering that lies silent today - but still tells the story of how wood once glided across national borders. The alluvial canal tunnel is the highlight: cool, dark, surprising. A brief moment of goose bumps - then light, forest and vastness again.

Rosenauer chapel and border climb: the quiet heart and the "fire" of the tour

The small Rosenauer Chapel seems like a place where time could stand still. Here, water, stone and history combine to create a tranquillity that is rarely found. This is followed by the most famous climb of the tour - 2 kilometres towards the border crossing. Never brutal, but challenging enough to make you turn round briefly at the top and think: Yes - that was a borderline experience.

Over the Hochficht back to the Mühlviertel

We finally make our way back to Austria through the Hochficht region. Wide expanses of forest, changing light, smooth trails - a scenic farewell that rounds off this circuit. Back in Schwarzenberg, you know that you have not only cycled through three countries - but also travelled a little way into yourself.
