Pleasure cycling on the Danube cycle path

Cycling can be so easy

On Europe's most important river, you don't need much of a plan. Just get on your bike, follow the water - and the rest almost takes care of itself. Drink what grows and is brewed here: Cider, beer, water from the region. Eat whatever suits you: Steckerlfisch, pub classics, honest cuisine. Big hotel castles? No such thing. Instead, there are small family-run businesses and campsites that welcome cyclists with open arms - and bid them farewell with a good breakfast.

Two shores. One destination. And many stories in between.

The starting point is Passau, the "Bavarian Venice". Three rivers, narrow alleyways, St Stephen's Cathedral - you can take your time here before the bike starts to move. Then the decision: North or south bank? Either way, both options lead to the day's destination in a relaxed manner. As soon as you cross the Danube on the Luitpold Bridge, the Oberhaus and Niederhaus fortresses nod down from above one last time. A silent greeting from history before the landscape takes over.

Extra tip:
If you like it particularly stylish, start in Schärding. The Silberzeile as a prelude, the Inn Cycle Path as a warm-up - and then onto the Danube Cycle Path.

Nature that simply goes with you.

The Danube soon shows its quieter, almost Mediterranean side. The Donauleiten accompany the ride with sunny slopes, rare plants and a landscape that doesn't have to be loud to impress. The route continues through Erlau to Obernzell, where ceramic history is told in the castle right on the river - a short stop to clear your head.

And then comes a place that takes the Danube quite literally: the Haus am Strom nature experience centre. Shaped by architects like a "wave and pebble", it welcomes visitors with, among other things, a water lift - yes, you read that right. There is also a series of exciting nature tours that bring the fauna and flora of the area closer: look, listen, understand - and then get back on your bike.

Vichtenstein Castle appears on the other bank, above it the Haugstein, the highest point in the Sauwald. You cycle on, look across and realise: here it is often enough just to roll.

The Danube in a different way: by boat.

We descend briefly in Niederranna. Zillenbauer Witti works here, a craftsman who knows what makes the Danube tick. For generations, he has been making Zillen - narrow, robust boats built for this river. A trip on a Zille is not a touristy gimmick, but a living Danube culture. Park your bike, get in and let yourself drift. The water sets the rhythm, the view becomes wider, time slows down. Then you get back on your bike - a little quieter, a little more relaxed.

The journey continues - also across the water.

After the Zillen moment, there are several routes, all of which are the right ones: Take the ferry to Schlögen, continue along the north bank, or through the Schlögener Schlinge on two wheels or take a relaxed ride on the Danube bus (longitudinal ferry Au-Grafenau). The Danube cycle path offers something that is rarely found elsewhere: Flexibility without stress.

Enjoyment is along the way, not at the end.

This tour requires no detours - the culinary delights are right along the route. Cider cellars, inns, hotels and small stalls are lined up next to each other as a matter of course. You stop when it suits you. There's no staging here, the food is served up. Honest, regional, cyclist-friendly.
