GUSTAV MAHLER Symphonie 2 & GULDA Cellokonzert – Philharmonie Salzburg

The unique 2nd Symphony by Gustav Mahler will be performed at the place of its creation - Steinbach am Attersee - by the Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. 

On 1 June 2024, Steinbach am Attersee will be the setting for a musical spectacle in a class of its own. On 1 June 2024, Steinbach am Attersee will become the backdrop for a musical spectacle in a class of its own when the renowned Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra and choir take to the stage under the direction of conductor Elisabeth Fuchs. The programme includes Gustav Mahler's monumental 2nd Symphony, also known as the "Resurrection Symphony", as well as the powerful Cello Concerto "An Electric Declaration of Love to the Salzkammergut" by Friedrich Gulda.

The concert will take place as part of the Capital of Culture 2024 project "Alles schon wegkomponiert".

From 29 May to 2 June 2024. June 2024, the annual  Gustav Mahler Festival in Steinbach will also take place. This concert is included in the festival pass.

Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony "Resurrection" is intended to go beyond any known format and deal with the great questions of meaning. 
Also known as the "Resurrection Symphony", its overwhelming sonority allows us to understand the composer's existential struggle.
Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony is not only an important work of classical music, it also reflects the existential questions and themes of human life. Life and death, the Last Judgement and the Resurrection are the powerful motifs that permeate this musical masterpiece. The last movement leads to a triumphant rise out of the darkness. Here Mahler combines choir and orchestra to create a powerful expression of faith in the resurrection and the immortality of the soul.

In the first part of the concert on 1 June, exceptional talent Emilian Schmid performs Friedrich Gulda's Cello Concerto.
The concert begins with Gulda's "Eklektische Liebeserklärung an das Salzkammergut". The cello concerto is undoubtedly a masterpiece that pushes the boundaries of traditional classical music: a unique fusion of folk music, jazz and classical music. It epitomises Gulda's unconventional approach to music. The work, full of expressive elements and creative twists, allows the beauty of the region to be heard in a unique way. Cello meets wind orchestra, percussion and electric guitar. A virtuoso, sophisticated, yet humorous musical journey through various genres, in conjunction with child prodigy Emilian Schmid as the soloist, which will delight the audience. May, a Gustav Mahler Voyage on the "Floating Art Salon" will introduce the second symphony, which will be performed in the Steinbach-Halle. 

Gustav Mahler composed this symphony in Steinbach am Attersee, where it will now also be heard. The Gustav Mahler composer's cottage in Steinbach am Attersee still bears witness to this time and can also be visited on site.
