Altenburg Museum - The Count of Windhaag It is hardly imaginable that some 300 years ago one of the period's most beautiful Castles was located in the lovely Upper Austrian town of Windhaag near Perg, in close vicinity to the River Enns. The mighty castle was built by Count Joachim Enzmilner, ranking among the most important businessman of the 17th century. He was born son of a school master near Augsburg in 1600. Before he got his double PhD in law in 1626, Enzmilner was the legal representative of Upper Austria's authorities. In 1927 he was appointed the "First Syndic". Strongly opposed to the Reformation, Enzmilner was fighting fiercely for the "Catholic Cause" as he was also the responsible secretary of Lower Austria's Reformation Department.

The picturesque little town of Altenburg invites all visitors to enjoy a journey back in time. The lively history of this place is documented in countless Museums and the unique Affiliated Church presenting one of Mühlviertel's most renowned culture treasures. Built around 1300, this church features 500-year old fresco paintings. Passionate walkers and hikers are strongly recommended to head for the scenic "Enzmilner Culture Theme Trail", leading from Windhaag via Münzbach to Altenburg. On 50 artistically designed information boards the eventful history of Windhaag, Altenburg and Münzbach is put on display.
