When winter comes, it becomes particularly idyllic and atmospheric in the Traunsee-Almtal region. Here you will find a quiet counterpart to the large, turbulent winter sports centers. The Advent season is characterized by authentic Christmas markets such as the "Schlösser Advent" in the picturesque lake and country castle place in Gmunden, which is probably one of the most beautiful of its kind in Austria (www.traunsee-advent.at).
From December 26 to February 2 you can visit the elaborate and painstakingly crafted nativity scenes, be it in the museums, in the churches but also in many private homes. Especially in Ebensee and Altmünster offers a "Kripperlroas". The last rough night on the 5th of January is marked in all places by the mystical and impressive Glöckler runs. White-clad men wear magnificent, candle-lit caps and heavy bells to ward off the evil spirits of winter.
