It is truly a challenge to attempt a “Tribute to Miles Davis.”

 He probably wasn’t the best or most virtuosic jazz trumpeter in the world. Nor was he the greatest jazz composer. Pianist Richie Beirach even once said, “Miles only wrote some ditties” (little songs).

In this tribute, “100 Miles” (MD’s 100th birthday will be in 2026), several of his contemporaries come together to pay tribute—and, of course, a certain Joe Zawinul, who played a pivotal role around 1970 in MD’s epoch-making stylistic shift toward jazz-rock
