From the novella “From the Life of a Good-for-Nothing” by Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1856) from the year 1826

“If I am a good-for-nothing, then that's fine, I will go into the world and make my fortune”

A miller sends his son, whom he calls a good-for-nothing because he makes him do all the work alone, out into the wide world. Cheerfully, the son takes his violin and leaves his village without a clear goal in mind.
The one driven by wanderlust travels from Vienna to Italy and then back to Germany. Along the way, he encounters whimsical fellow spirits and his true love.

**The main work of late German Romanticism, which first appeared in full exactly 200 years ago (1826), deals with, among other things, the contrast between moralizing Philistines and “lazy” life artists.**

While Goethe’s “Italian Journey” is a conscious observation and self-cultivation, Eichendorff represents a programmatic non-perception.
In deliberate distance to the Protestant notion of a God only testified in word, Eichendorff allows the hero to experience God’s grace in experiences of nature, the course of the journey, and biographical providence directly, with scenes of temptation (seduction, sensuality, Italian milieu) demonstratively not ending in sin, but in unshakable trust in God and moral integrity.

**Philipp Hochmair**

Philipp Hochmair is an Austrian film, television, and theater actor. He studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and at CNSAD in Paris (1993-1996). Besides his work in film, he is especially known for his stage work at national and international theaters, where he has taken on many classical roles in a modern “post-dramatic” style, including Hamlet, Mephisto (Goethe's Faust), and Werther (based on Goethe's epistolary novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther”).
