Berlin, mid-’90s: Two teenagers from the East Berlin suburbs find themselves in the newly liberated city, dancing at acid house parties in squatted venues, and in the process discover what binds them together. Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary become Modeselektor—named after a function on the Roland RE-201 Space Echo—and transform from a DJ duo into one of the defining forces in electronic music over the past two decades. Through BPitch Control and their own labels, Monkeytown Records and 50Weapons, they’ve carved out a unique chapter in club history: a sound that blends IDM, UK bass, dubstep, techno, and hip-hop, held together by maximum intensity and a sense of the absurd. Their list of collaborations reads like a “Who’s Who” of the global underground: Thom Yorke appears twice on the album “Monkeytown,” joined by Blixa Bargeld, Iggor Cavalera, Omar Souleyman, and Anti-Pop Consortium. And then there’s Moderat—the collaborative project with Sascha Ring (aka Apparat), which has evolved into a band in its own right and fills sold-out venues worldwide. Chaos, humor, and genuine curiosity: that was and remains the core of Modeselektor. Now “Classics Vol. 01” is being released—it’s no coincidence that CV stands for Curriculum Vitae. What was originally planned as a re-recording of old tracks from the albums “Hello Mom!” and “Happy Birthday!” took an unexpected turn. To complete the project, they had to recover hard drives that hadn’t been connected to the internet for 15 years—macOS 9, Logic Silver, the second version of Ableton. What began as an archaeological dig ended up as new compositions. “Blockchain” carries the energy of the 2007 track “Black Block,” but has traded the original’s 8-bit framework for a purist techno arrangement. Tracks like “Tetrispack,” “Suckerpin,” and “Kill Bill” served as source material—they were taken apart, reinterpreted, or ultimately used merely as abstract inspiration. “Capturing that back-to-the-roots feeling, with the scent of beer and the texture of tobacco crumbs,” is how Gernot Bronsert describes the approach. No glossy polish, no calculated “freshness”—just an honest commitment to their own origins. A return to the past becomes the future. What follows is a tour.
