In the 1990s, they were a flagship act of the Linz pop music scene. Smart Import was a household name to many—not only in Linz, but far beyond the country’s borders. Inspired by the spirit of the Beatles, the quartet captivated audiences with highly melodic rock and pop songs and harmonized vocals. Wolfgang Pfeiffer, Helmut and Johannes Schmidauer, and Peter Klinger were particularly compelling in live performances and were in high demand on stages throughout Austria. After three highly acclaimed CD releases, the Smart Import chapter came to a close in 1998 with a concert at the Posthof in Linz. Twenty-eight years after their farewell concert, the band is returning to the scene of the action with its original lineup. Matured by the years and their experience, driven by the joy and passion of making music together, and with new songs, the “Smart 4” are breathing new life into their “old band.” But they’re not just evoking the spirit of the past; Smart Import is showcasing a whole new facet of their creative songwriting. Whereas English used to be their medium of expression, they now sing in the Upper Austrian dialect, lending the songs greater authenticity and a completely fresh touch. In this way, everything that has creatively built up within them over the decades finds an outlet in an even more honest and direct manner. The new songs in their program are complemented by selected tracks from their back catalog. Plus, there are plenty of stories to tell that shed light on both the past and the present. Thus, Smart Import’s comeback becomes an evening with the feel of a revue—a journey through time that invites both recognition and new discoveries.
