Virtuoso lute music with the active participation of strings was his specialty. He was one of the last and most important lutenists of the Baroque period and carried the theorbized version (with a long neck) of the instrument into the 18th century. There it lives on to this day in Schrammel music. Karl Kohaut's melodies are as folksy as they are thrillingly modern.
