Hellmuth Karasek noted ironically in Der Spiegel that "some critics grumpily remarked that the audience laughed." In fact, "Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh" is a feather-light, subtle comedy full of allusions to the vain cult of poetry and the senselessly rotating cultural scene: profound, comedic - and self-deprecating at the same time.
