The actor Kark Markovics reads Nikolai Gogol's "The Overcoat" - the Eggner Trio provides the appropriate music from Russia. In german language.
"We all come from Gogol's mantle," said the author Fyodor Dostoyevsky, bowing to the novella published in 1842, which was a key work for many subsequent Russian writers. The plot revolves around the civil servant Akaki Akakiwitsch Baschmatschkin, who earns his living as a copyist in a ministerial department in St. Petersburg. His modest and lonely, but not dissatisfied, everyday life is filled entirely with paperwork. When the purchase of a new coat becomes necessary, his routine is disrupted: although Akaki has to save up the money for the garment, the acquisition gives him a whole new perspective on the beauty of life. The joy is short-lived, however: Akaki's new coat is stolen during a night-time robbery - a shock that destroys him. Austrian actor Karl Markovics brings Gogol's touching and biting social criticism to life. The Eggner Trio provides the 'sound of St. Petersburg': Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 1 was composed in the Russian metropolis in 1923, while Piano Trio No. 2, composed twenty years later, was premiered here in 1944.
