The basic textual form of the Donnersbachwald Nikolospiel goes back to a late medieval tradition and was recorded in 1861 by the Donnersbachwald schoolmaster and local historian Karl Reiterer.
The mountain village of Donnersbachwald has a total of 320 inhabitants. Of these, 35 take part in the Nikolospiel. Originally, a small play group went from farm to farm. Today, the Nikolospiel is played on the village square.
The tradition of the Raunächte, the pre-Christmas period, in which pagan and Christian elements are so happily combined, is brought to life in its former form with this traditional text.
