The varied route runs over the Falkenstein and along the Rieder Steig to St. Wolfgang, combining breathtaking views with numerous cultural and historical attractions.Right at the start of the trail, a Gschmå-Platzl provides information about the history of pilgrims at Lake Wolfgang. A short while later, you’ll reach the Ochsenkreuz on Metzgerinsel, whose history is also explained on a Gschmå-Platzl. Another historic site along the route is the Hochzeitskreuz, for which interesting information is also provided. The trail then leads uphill along the Falkenstein Way of the Cross. Along the way, there is a small Marian chapel with seating. At Scheffelblick, an impressive panorama of Lake Wolfgang opens up. Several rest areas and another “Gschmå-Platzl” provide interesting facts about the landscape and its history. Further along the route, you’ll reach the Brunn Chapel with its famous healing spring. According to tradition, Saint Wolfgang caused a spring to gush forth at this spot to save a thirsty monk. To this day, the water is said to have healing properties, particularly for eye ailments, infertility, and foot ailments. Not far from there is the Falkenstein Chapel, which nestles directly against the rock face. According to legend, Saint Wolfgang is said to have lived here. Above the altar is a narrow crevice in the rock that plays a special role in tradition. Pilgrims traditionally pass through this area in silence as a sign of inner reflection and purification. The path then leads to the Schlafkapelle. There, indentations in the rock recall the tradition that Saint Wolfgang rested his head and hands here. In popular piety, this place is considered to have special significance. The well-known Hacklwurfkapelle is located in the immediate vicinity. According to legend, St. Wolfgang threw his axe down into the valley from this spot and vowed to build a church at the spot where it landed. This legendary “Hacklwurf” is considered the origin of the choice of location for the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang. After passing these historical and religious sites, the Rieder Steig continues toward St. Wolfgang. Along the trail are additional chapels, Gschmå-Platzl, and viewpoints overlooking Lake Wolfgang and the town of St. Wolfgang. The Wolfgangipfad ends at the St. Wolfgang Tourist Office and offers an impressive blend of nature, history, culture, and regional legends along its entire route.
