From there, the route follows the signs uphill to Wolfgangsee Straße. After crossing the street, the trail first turns left and then enters the forest on the right side near Haus Ebner. Right at the entrance to the forest, you’ll cross a small stream. After a short stretch through the woods, the route reaches the Widingergut, a farmstead over 500 years old that has been carefully restored. The farm is surrounded by expansive meadows and forests and is home to various animal species, including sheep, horses, Highland cattle, and chickens. A small chapel with creative seating options complements the idyllic appearance of the estate. Further along the way, several benches invite you to take a break and offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The trail signs eventually lead to a gravel road that crosses a shallow stream to the trailhead for the Plombergstein. The hiking trail that follows features more than 220 steps and leads to the summit of the Plombergstein. An old legend is associated with the Plombergstein: Three princes set out in search of the most beautiful place in the world to ask a princess to marry them. When they caught sight of Lake Wolfgang, they are said to have been so overwhelmed by the beauty of the landscape that they turned to stone. According to tradition, this is how the Mitterstein, the Obenauerstein, and the Plombergstein came to be. At a height of 830 meters, the Plombergstein is one of the most popular vantage points above St. Gilgen. In addition to the sweeping views, the area impresses with its striking rock formations, caves, and gorges, which can be explored especially along the descent. During the French Wars at the beginning of the 19th century, these natural formations served as hiding places for the residents of St. Gilgen to store their valuables. In addition, marble was quarried at the Plombergstein for a time; some of it was used for the war memorial in St. Gilgen. The descent follows the trail signs to the St. Gilgen boat landing, where the Panorama Trail comes to an end.
