Impressive remains of the wall, hidden corners and a wonderful panoramic view of the entire lake district await you at the top. The Wartenfels ruins are one of the most striking landmarks around Lake Mondsee - but the direct hiking trail from St. Lorenz is hardly known to many. This option is particularly environmentally friendly: instead of circling the mountain by car, the ascent starts directly in the village.The ruins on a rocky outcrop of the Schober date back to the 13th century and once served as an important border fortification. Today, it is an exciting place of discovery, especially for children. Old walls, tower remains and winding corners stimulate the imagination and at the same time open up an impressive view over the Salzkammergut. **Author's tip** The Gasthaus Forsthaus below the ruins (towards the Schober parking lot) is a great place to stop for a bite to eat. Note: Opening times vary - it's best to check online in advance. **Motivational question for little knights:** Which lakes can you discover from the Wartenfels ruins? **Start:** The starting point is at the Schwandbauer in the Keuschen district (St. Lorenz). **Ascent:** From the parking lot, a signposted hiking trail leads in the direction of Wartenfels/Schober, mostly through the forest. **Character:** The path climbs steadily, is rooty and stony in places - ideal for adventurous children. **Destination:** After the forest section, the terrain opens up and the Wartenfels ruins are reached. **Way back:** The descent follows the same route back to St. Lorenz, with an optional rest or refreshment stop at the forester's lodge. **Easy" variant:** For less experienced children, we recommend starting at the Schober parking lot (approach via Thalgau). From there, a wide path with an elevation gain of around 90 meters leads comfortably to the ruins in around 1 hour.
