The further you move away from the "main summit," the more technical and slower the terrain becomes, and the trail narrows, but it is all the more rewarding for the experienced trail runner. **Quality of experience:** ****** **Recommended season:** - June - July - August - September - October **Properties:** - Loop - Scenic - Insider tip - Summit route **Description:** On a good day at the weekend, there is a bustle on the way to Katrin, especially from the cable car station to the summit cross. But this route has much more to offer for the ambitious trail runner! It already starts at the beautiful Nussensee as a successful starting and ending point for an extensive crossing that stretches over the entire ridge of the Katergebirge. The ascent from there is classic, over the ski slopes of Katrin, up to the main summit with its large steel cross. Then you follow back a few meters to the junction towards Hainzen. Already at Hainzen it is much quieter and you have a brilliant view towards Bad Goisern with Lake Hallstatt and the Dachstein massif in the background! On the next section, the trail becomes increasingly narrow and it is extremely fun in the rolling terrain, with some small, partly quite rocky climbs up and down again. Before you reach Rosskopf, you walk a short sharp ridge, which is secured with a rope. From Rosskopf you continue along the ridge a little further and then follow right down over pastures to an unmanaged hut. Here watch for the markings on the ground and follow slightly right downhill. The way down back to the forest roads at Nussensee is quite overgrown in summer and autumn; it is advisable to take tick spray beforehand. Many small single trails lead down in tight switchbacks and also repeatedly cross the forest road further down. It is still advisable to stay especially on the marked path further down to not miss the right turn to Nussensee. Besides, running here is really enjoyable. **Directions:** The route is continuously marked, especially towards Hainzen and Rosskopf, you follow the ridge line. The ridge is well secured, bypassing the ridge below is possible but rather not recommended. On the downhill, you can take the trail, which repeatedly shortens the forest road and is nice to run. **Tip:** Especially recommended in spring when the snow has gone and in early summer, as the grass is not yet so tall then.**Safety guidelines:** Surefootedness and a head for heights are absolutely necessary for the rope-secured passage between Hainzen and Rosskopf. The length of the route through partly rocky terrain should not be underestimated, especially since you cannot descend early and would have to continue to Rosskopf or turn back.**Equipment:** Pack enough water, it can be refilled at the mountain station of the cable car.
