Keep right here - the path now leads upriver and steeply uphill. Now follow the Grosse Mühl for some 2 km to the bridge across the Mühl. Cross over here and follow the flat hiking trail via "Bauer in Hof" about 2.5 km back to the town centre. Around a quarter to a third of the central Mühlviertel highlands are covered by forest, and forest cover has been steadily increasing for a few centuries. Even today, this trend is continuing due to the abandonment of agricultural utilisation ("farmer death") and has led to an increase in forest cover of 5 to 10 % in the last 20 years. Natural forest types would mainly be beech forests, but spruce is actually the dominant forest tree in the current forest landscape. Exceptions are low-lying areas and steep, semi-natural hillside forests, where deciduous trees are more common. If spruce forests are underutilised for decades, they are more susceptible to severe weather events and consequential damage such as beetle infestation (spruce bark beetle) and the small spruce leaf wasp. Living in harmony with nature is wonderful and if you appreciate nature and its creatures and do not envy others their good fortune, it will thank you for it. Tel.: +43 (0) 72 82 / 53 55-0 **Bewaldetes Hochland...** Etwa ein Viertel bis ein Drittel des zentralmühlviertler Hochlandes sind von Wald bedeckt, die Bewaldung nimmt seit wenigen Jahrhunderten ständig zu. Auch heute setzt sich dieser Trend durch die Aufgabe landwirtschaftlicher Nutzungen („Bauernsterben“) fort und führte in den letzten 20 Jahren zu einer Waldzunahme von 5 bis 10 %. Natürliche Waldtypen wären hauptsächlich Buchenwälder, tatsächlich ist im aktuellen Waldbild die Fichte der dominante Waldbaum. Ausnahmen sind Tieflagen und steile, naturnahe Hangwälder, wo vermehrt Laubbäume vorkommen. Werden die Fichtenforste jahrzehntelang unternutzt, sind sie anfälliger für Unwetterereignisse und Folgeschäden, wie Käferbefall (Buchdrucker) und Kleine Fichtenblattwespe. In Eintracht mit der Natur zu leben ist wundervoll und wenn man die Natur und ihre Wesen zu schätzen weiß und andere nicht um ihr Glück beneidet, wird sie es einem auch danken.
